Every Sunday, I’m sharing a snapshot of the week’s most powerful statements; from experts and regular people alike. While I always dive deep into data, context, and detail, there’s something powerful about a single, well-timed quote—a brief moment that captures history in the making.

Here’s your weekly roundup of the quotes that stuck with me during the week of February 17th - February 23rd, 2025:

This professor discussing the United States' change in foreign policy:

Lawrence Friedman, emeritus professor of War studies at King's college in London: "In the past, you assumed that this (the US) was a serious, competent country. It's unnerving to think that might not be the case. There is a sense that the guard rails just aren't there."

This researcher explaining the latest conspiracy theory cooked up by MAGA:

Michaela Mihailescu, PhD researcher, University of Bath: "The claim that a sudden surge in Google searches for terms like quote 'Rico law' and 'Swiss bank' indicates a widespread exodus of corrupt bureaucrats is based on little more than speculation - never mind that we have zero evidence that these searches are even coming from DC insiders."

This former Tea-Party conservative, originally known for his criticisms of Barack Obama:

Joe Walsh on The Jim Acosta Show: "I'll say Jim what I think you're too decent to say; I think Trump's a Russian asset. I think Putin has something on him. I think Trump works for Putin. I think Trump stands with Putin, and I was thinking this morning, Jim, I'm just an average American... What an odd f****** position for me to be in right now, for any American, to actually oppose one's own country... I stand with Ukraine, I stand with NATO, I stand with the Free world, freedom and democracy, and so because Trump, by the extension of the United States right now stands opposed to all of that... I oppose my own country right now. This is weird."

An American voter who worked for our former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, sharing what he knows about the man America cast aside:

B.A. Friedman, Bluesky: "General Brown is a brilliant, amazing leader. I worked at the air staff for 3 years and it was known that he read everything the staff wrote for him. He believes if an analyst took the time to write it, it's his responsibility to read it. Very few generals do this."

An American voter in a red district holding his representative to account:

Michael Wittig, at a town hall for GOP Rep. Scott Fitzgerald: "Are you going to subpoena him at some point? Are you willing to use your subpoena power to tell musk to stand in front of Congress and answer some hard questions?"

An American voter from Substack processing the news of the week:

Malynda Hale, Substack: "It really concerns me that there isn't a collective moral clarity in this country. Political differences aside, how do we not know the difference between right and wrong anymore?"

An American voter in a red district, who is a lawyer herself, also holding her representative to account:

Debra Norris, speaking at GOP Senator Pete Sessions' town hall: "The executive can only enforce laws passed by Congress; they cannot make laws. When are you going to wrest control back from the executive and stop hurting your constituents?"

An American voter from Substack making a salient point about our country:

Liz Getty, Substack: "I have never wanted to be more wrong, but I truly don't think Americans understand the reality of this moment in democracy. It is not business as usual on any front."

An American voter on Bluesky with a shrewd observation:

Alexandra Billings, Bluesky: "Steve Bannon made the Nazi salute. Elon Musk made the Nazi salute. Donald Trump is surrounded by people who make the Nazi salute. You are the company you keep."

I don't know who's in charge of writing America's history books, but I'd humbly like to submit all of the above.
