At Some Point, We’re Gonna Have To Start Talking About Secession.
I will NEVER contribute tax dollars to a segregated society, PERIOD.
I spent the morning listening to a podcast called Strict Scrutiny, which is focused on the Supreme Court of the United States. There are three hosts; a lawyer and professor at Michigan, a lawyer and professor at NYU, and a lawyer and professor at UPenn.

They were discussing the Trump administration’s efforts to bring back segregation.
“And in their quest to resegregate the country, the Marine Corp under Pete Hegseth’s leadership announced that it would be separating service members who have a genetic skin condition that causes pain and scarring from shaving; The Marine Corp says if the condition doesn’t resolve within a year, they would therefore need to continue to request a waiver for shaving requirement and could be removed. What is this condition? Pseudofolliculitis Barbae, or PFB, and guess who this condition, that may soon functionally become disqualifying for military service, affects primarily? Black men.” - Strict Scrutiny, March 24th
I didn’t believe them, which is insane; of course they’d have fact checkers to confirm everything before they put it on the air, but it just seemed so outlandish and cruel... Unfortunately, it is true, and just one more step in a much larger pattern.
We’re barely more than two months into his term, and Donald Trump has made more changes to our country than any President who came before him in that time. I don’t agree with any of his moves. None of them. In every possible way, this administration fundamentally does NOT represent me. They are not looking out for my interests, their morals do not align with mine, and I feel their goals are categorically bad for our country. There are millions of Americans who feel the same way I do.
We’re rapidly losing our chance to stop this change in our country. Americans are used to a certain amount of whiplash with the change of new administrations; our stances on many issues flip-flop every 4 years as we elect a Democrat, then a Republican, then a Democrat, then a Republican… but this is not that. Donald Trump is breaking systems that CANNOT simply be restarted. These changes will be long-lasting.
If this is the country they want, if this is what they’re determined to build, then I don’t want to be an American citizen anymore.
At some point, we’re gonna have to start talking about secession.
This conversation isn’t new, and there’s already a petition collecting signatures to put the question on the 2028 ballot in California. I can already guess what the reactions to this conversation will be; Republicans, conservatives, and even some centrist Democrats might see this conversation as premature, or an overreaction. They’ll say the folks in support of secession are just being sore losers and they shouldn’t give up on the country yet, they should work to improve the country we have. The problem is, we can’t do that. Not anymore.
Donald Trump is acting outside the bounds of American democracy and the rule of law.
It’s one thing to oppose the ideological moves of a new administration; Americans are VERY familiar with that… but that’s not what this is. Donald Trump is seizing power through illegal means and making permanent changes to our country. If We The People continue to operate under the assumption that business-as-usual tactics will stop what’s happening, then our country is lost.
I like your definition better, I just think it applies to Trump supporters now. Most of the people you've called deranged are actively being proven right, day by day.
I want out too. I have no means to leave the country - as a disabled person there are very few countries who would take me anyway. Seceeding gives me some glimmer of hope that I've all but lost.
